Here is a handy guide of questions to ask and things to look for when sourcing DJs and musicians.

Professionalism

When you speak to a DJ or musician, keep the following questions in mind to determine their general level of professionalism: What DJ Associations do they belong to? Do they carry Liability Insurance? Does their equipment meet industry standards or is it “home equipment”? When you interact with them, do they display professionalism and are they willing to accommodate your needs?

Wedding Experience

In order to find out if a DJ or musician has had a good amount of wedding-related experience, ask if you could see a recorded performance or see them in person as they play an event. Ask specifically if they have wedding experience and how many weddings they have done. Get references where you can and ask to see testimonials and recommendations. Do they have creative ideas for a wedding reception? Are they organized and confident in their knowledge? Do they have a sheet for planning out the event?

Pricing

Determine exactly what is included in the pricing. Try to draw out hidden charges. For example, do they have to buy music and will that cost extra, are there extra charges for setting up or dismantling? How about any special equipment that you will need?

Style

Establish ahead of time, what style of music you would like your DJ or musician to play. Are they familiar with the type of music you would like them to play? Do they have a good selection of music? Ask to see their song list. What is their personality and style like? Is this what you want for your wedding? Will they be comfortable motivating a crowd? What is their appearance and what will they wear at your wedding? Will they accommodate special requests from you and your guests? Will they initiate games? Do they have any special effects equipment?

Lastly, if you are dealing with a larger company, make sure you meet with the particular DJ you will be working with so there are no surprise changes on your wedding day.
